Bonfires on the beach, Fireworks everyhwere, dinner with family or friends, music enlivened the morning, torches descend from the mountaintops, traditional dances and joy, great joy. Any valid tradition is to celebrate the shortest night of the year. And there is no excuse for the night of June 23: Sant Joan live big in Catalonia and here we collect some of these celebrations. In the Pyrenees this year celebrates the most special failures after being declared a World Heritage Site and the Flame of Canigou remains a strong tradition in many populations. Artés verbena brings a touch of uniqueness while Calella de Palafrugell and Palamós in Costa Brava, take the opportunity to start their festivals. In Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona just need to walk the streets and be carried away among the popular celebrations. With fire and pyrotechnical as being characteristic while coca de Sant Joan is savored, you are all set to enjoy one of the most magical nights of the year. The ‘coca’ has derived from egg ‘tortells’ into the actual fruit ‘cocas’, with pine nuts and sweet fruit. Not all ‘coca’ that is consumed this night are sweet ones, there are also the so called “Coca de Recapte”, having delicious ingredients, like tomato, olives, tuna…The “coca is the perfect excuse to socialize, a shared meal, light and sweet enough to appeal to young and old alike.
Sant Joan is the shortest night in the year, in Barcelona and Catalonia we celebrate the summer solstice, with this magic night that will surprise you with all the partys going on in the streets, beaches, and many other places. The sun is seen as a symbol of fertility and wealth and so it must be given strength. The strength is provided by bonfires and fireworks lit throughout the city for Sant Joan.
