Wine tourism allows you to discover a country through its wines, those of Catalonia are most varied and of high quality, there are eleven designations of origin (DO): Alella, Conca de Barberà, Costers del Segre, Empordà, Montsant, Penedés, Pla de Bages, Priorat, Tarragona and Terra Alta in addition to the DO of Cava, the internationally renowned Catalan sparkling wine, located mainland in Penedés.
The experience of wine tasting on its old wineries will empower you to see how the Mediterranean clima, the sun and the differed scenery have affected their body, smell and flavor.
Catalonia has a wide variety of wines to taste… If you try the wines of the Penedés Cava and Wine Region (only 30’ from Barcelona), among the most prized internationally, you will appreciate the unique taste conferred to it by the diversity of the soils that make up the region, marked by the green of the hills and valleys and the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea. Another renowned wine region is Priorat (near Tarragona) with ist specific soil the “llicorella” slate-like terrain confers to the classic Priorat made from old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, concentrated aromas of licorice, tar and brandied cherries. Near Gratallops, you can go for a nice walk among the vines with one of our local guides. It’ll be great fun if you go with friends and when you’ve finished, take advantage of the excellent local gastronomy.
Wines bathed by the Mediterranean Sea
If you are most interested in wine tourism close to the sea the Empordà appellation, on the Costa Brava is your choice! There you can enjoy wine tasting either white and red wines are ideal to round off a good meal. But also its recognized sweet wines are a must, In the area of the Cap de Creus Natural Park (part of UNESCO World Heritage) the vines grow between the massif, and the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà marshes which truly leaves an impression on its wines. You can taste a great gastronomy marrying the local fish and seafood with the wine. Not only that! You can also take advantage of this day trip to visit Cadaqué Fisherman’s Village and of course, you have to visit the Salvador Dalí Home-Museum in Portlligat, with its most surrealistic sculptures and paintings of their lifetime spent in this wonderful location by the sea.
