Priorat being near the old Roman capital of the Iberian Peninsula, Tarraco, vineyards have existed for over 2000 years. It is trusted that a large portion of those vineyards were at first worked by the Romans.

With this one day trip wine tour, you will discover from early small wineries to family-run vineyards aging wines in ancient cellars, you will witness the spectrum of wine makers.

First stop is an International Awarded winery located in the Porrera region, amid beautiful natural surroundings that boast enormous advantages for viticulture, in their breathtaking landscape they produce one of best Priorat wines due to its particular winemaking focussed on reflecting, the elegance, freshness, harmony and profound mineral essence of the Priorat.

Later you will visit a family owned winery in Priorat, a spectacular vineyard, with the classic “llicorella” soil, oriented to the north of the famed town of Gratallops, overlooking the Montsant river valley, after a complete visit and wine tasting you will enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch paired with local wines.

At each wine cellar a wine expert with a wide experience in Priorat wineries, will guide you and explain the features of their vineyards. Your wine knowledge will considerably increase, always including a complete wine tasting, while you witness dramatic scenery on this special wine journey at Priorat.

International Awarded Winery

A magnificent way to start your Priorat day trip: A complete guided visit and wine tasting at the winery, located in the Porrera region, one of the coolest parts of the Priorat. Thanks largely to the marked influence of north-easterly winds, with a subtle moderating effect from the Mediterranean, and its topography, characterized by some of the highest and steepest vineyards in the appellation. These factors combine to create strong temperature variations between night and day which guarantee optimal phenolic ripening and the preservation of acidity, freshness and aromas. Likewise, its multiple aspects create a rich diversity of mesoclimates and offer the opportunity to create wines of particular complexity and depth.

All of this is combined with almost exclusively slate soils, known locally as llicorella, which are a feature of only the top vineyards in the Priorat and which play such a key part in the unique personality of these wines.They have used hundred-year-old Carinyena and Garnacha Negra vines from exceptional vineyards which benefit from all of these qualities and with whose owners we share longstanding ties of friendship, esteem and respect.

Family owned Winery

Your next visit is a beautiful Family owned Wine Cellar purchased in October 1997 by this British family on the recommendation of Réné Barbier, owner of one of the 5 pioneer winery in Priorat and founder of the “new wave” movement in Priorat during the late 1980’s. The initial purchase of 10 hectares of abandoned terraces was followed by a new acquisition in 2000, completing the 18 hectares estate.

The original vineyard included a small plot of old Carignan and Grenache vines. This was completed in 1998 with plantings of more Grenache, Syrah and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre and Viognier. With the new acquisition in 2000 came 2500 old Grenache and Carignan vines, more than 60 years old. More vines were planted in 2001 including some Grenache Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Touriga Nacional.
